The Resource Satellite Data Receiving Station was completed in 1993. This system combines hardware and software provided by the MDA Company of Canada. It uses a 13 meter antenna array to receive data and includes a complete acquisition and reception system (A&R), recording and reproduction system (DRR), and data processing system (PRS) (as shown in the picture). After being in operation for a decade, most of the systems have been replaced and upgraded. There is only thirteen-meter aerial related equipment running continuously at present.
The picture below shows the current system structure, including the 6.1-meter aerial receiver completed in October 2003. Figure 3-1 shows the times when the main software and hardware were installed and ceased to be used. It can be seen that the first generation systems were replaced with new systems from 1999 to 2002. In other words, the service life was more than seven years. Replacements were made due to the need to receive data from new satellites, to improve computer facilities, and change of the present media. Although the first generation systems were still quite stable, it is inevitable that they would be eliminated with the change of time.
Within a decade, because of being able to receive data from SPOT4, DAAS has replaced QPS and SPS&PPGS. This has made up the deficiency in GOCS's incapability of processing SPOT4 data. After receiving SPOT5 data, TS5 has replaced DAAS&SPS and MSGPS has made up for the deficiency in PPGS's incapability of processing SPOT5 data. In addition, work stations have been substituted for the earliest host (VAX) as the internal computer. Data saving media have also changed with the times. We have no choice but to save product data on CDs and DVDs and to substitute DLT for the HDDT original data. It took one year to finish re-recording about 2200 HDDT tapes (in 2002). In this period, our station has updated all kinds of software, hardware, and data saving media in preparation to step into another new decade. At present, data from seven satellites can be received under two aerial systems. The FORMOSAT-2 back-end processing system is ready as well.
Our station was tested and commences operation in June 1993 and began continuous reception from SPOT-1, SPOT-2, EPS-1, SPOT-3, ERS-, TERRA, AQUA, and SPOT-5. We have accumulated data from 12 satellites up to now. Our station still receives SPOT-4, SPOT-5, ERS-2, TERRA, AQUA and FORMOSAT-2 data. The chart below shows the beginning and end dates for reception of all sorts of satellites.
From June 1993 to the end of December 2013, the station had received LANDSAT-5 data 975 times with 12,084 entries; SPOT series data 27,541 times for 2,475,161 entries; ERS series data 1,651 times for 27,832 entries; EROS-A data 679 times (equal number of entries), TERRA and AUQA data a total of 9,230 times for 9,167 entries and 7,038 times for 106,340 entries for Formosat-2. The table below shows annual statistics of how many times data have been received from the various satellites and the catalogue file number.
The table below shows an annual tally of the various SPOT products, with the filing class number for all levels of products provided for our clients.
